The problem
A phone, watch or handheld GPS only records what its sensors estimate at that moment. Weak reception, signal reflections, pauses, dense point sampling and poor altitude data can all leave errors behind.
Position jumps and stationary drift can add false detours or movement that never happened.
Small location errors accumulate, making the track longer than the route actually travelled.
Noisy altitude values can produce an unrealistic profile and an inflated total ascent.
Why GPXFixr exists
Shared tracks should describe the real route—not the recording errors made along the way.
Thousands of GPX tracks are uploaded to hiking websites and reused by other people for planning, navigation and route comparison. When those files are “dirty,” their geometry, distance, elevation and calculated ascent may not be dependable. GPXFixr is being built to make those recordings cleaner and easier to trust before they are archived or shared.
What it does today
Upload a file, inspect it on the map and elevation profile, apply repairs, compare the result with the original and export the cleaned track.
Reduce spikes, stationary jitter and unnecessarily dense point clusters.
Replace unreliable recorded altitude with terrain elevation where appropriate.
Review maps, profiles and track metrics before downloading the corrected GPX file.
Still growing
The current priority is improving hiking GPX tracks and expanding the set of recording problems that can be detected and repaired. Later, the same approach can be adapted to other types of movement, including cycling, driving and flying, where a “correct” track follows different rules.
